Books, My Best Buddies!!! SS in US - 2

I find the library system in US really really amazing.. the number of books they lend, the wide range of books available, the community programs that they arrange. I would have loved a few Indian authors books but well, I cant ask for everything and I am perfectly happy with what I get. The library membership is the best thing that S did for me. Throughout the winter, all I did after packing off S to office with his lunch box was bundle up in a comforter and lie down on the floor where the sunrays fall from the window with a lot of pillows scattered around and phone, food, and water nearby :) and just lie there until he comes back.

We being on L1 here and unsure of the stay here, on my insistence, have decided against going for a car and since the climatic conditions in Atlanta are not that extreme, have been managing fairly well with the local public transport system, MARTA. This means that every 15 days or so, S has to carry me and all the books to the library in downtown and get another load back home and beleive me, I cannot even the lift the knapsack once we fill it with the books and the poor thing carries it all the way back. So, if and when I happen to say that I am crazy about this guy, you know why!!!!

Thank God, but for these buddies I would have gone crazy here alone whole day... :).. jai ho books and Jai ho Atlanta-Fulton County Library..

The Little Biggg Things!!!

When I sometimes begin to feel sad or lonely, I remind myself that there is this person in my life who will be affected by every little thing that I do and for whom my happiness and sorrow matters just as much as his..

When the selfish me begins to think that being a housewife is a thankless job and one is better off alone, then the genuine me remembers about all the little big things that S does for me and cooking is not just the one thing that he does. Being the pet in his family and not allowed to even lift a glass in his house, he does soo many things for us. He helps me out with dosas, vadas, and everything.. thanks a ton!!!

This collage has the kaju sweet, the pakoras, and the special omlettes by S :)
I am truly touched at times when he takes all the pains to cook something for me. I am afraid I cant say he is an Ace in culinary department, but the love with which it is prepared just bowls me over and guys, if you have not already noticed the extra inches around my belly, I blame it soley on him ;).

The Kaju sweet that he made was a surprise to me actually. I went for a walk with a friend in our apartment only to come and find him giving the goofy smiles and no prizes for guessing that I will cherish that moment forever and ever... so when I say that life sucks, please do remind me of these wonderful things :).

Childhood Memories..

This song happens to be one of our (me and kiddoo's) favorite. I love the way my bro used to dance when this was on TV.. No offense meant to anyone but as kids we used to find the dance steps and the facial expressions amusing and my bro exaggerating them was a sight to see... :)))..

It was a very pleasant feeling watching it in Pardes, thanks to Youtube and our high-speed internet connection... ghar ki yaad aagayi. All said and done, this song is one of my alltime favorites.

My First Collage

I always like the collage effect that a lot of you guys give to the pictures and always wondered how to do them. Being the highly technically challenged person that I am, I never thought of learning or even asking someone as to how to go about.. Accidentally today, when we downloaded Picasa, I realized that it was very simple.. so here I go play with my newly acquired talent ;).. if you can call it that.

These are the pics that we had taken at our visit to the aquarium, a good friend of ours was busy handling the cam and capturing these swimming beauties when S and myself were enjoying ourselves thoroughly :).

Rama Navami..

The day celebrated as Rama Navami also happens to be my birthday as per the telugu calender.. I was born on this day in Dasami gahadiyalu... so, needless to say, yours truly has been celebrating birthday twice a year so far.. I miss my grandmother today terribly, can do anything just to get a glimpse of her and to see that happiness in her eyes seeing me carry her traditions forward... God!!! why is it so tough to let go of her thoughts in every single thing I do.. it still hurts when I see her pic smiling at me.. why cant she do that in person :(((.

Spring Blooms!!

Apart from the pollen and the green-coat it leaves on the cars and the roads, everything is gradually becoming green and colorful...

The lake in the midst of our apartment complex...

The yellow creeper on the lake railing.

The pink flowers

My Work Woes :((

Being a working woman, the one problem I had coming to US with S was that I might miss my work and feel bored to death but being here on L2 and having the eligibility to work here as well was one concession. We were under the assumption that we need to wait for 90 days before applying for the same and then it would take sometime before the processing is done.. so I was kind of dreaming that I would be able to work around mid April or May beginning in the least.. but now my dreams seem to have shattered for a while at least 'cos the USCIS guys say that it would take minimum 75 days for the processing to be done...

Godddd!!! It is really really disappointing for me, especially with my rapidly degenerating professional skills (I am into medical transcription and constant touch with the voice files is kind of necessary to keep myself in form :((()... I need to keep myself occupied constructively before I actually torture S with all the feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness that seem to have surfaced all of a sudden again... God, give me the strength to stay sane and retain my peace of mind for some more time!!!!!!!

Arrival.. SS in US - 1

This Thursday, March 22, 2007, marked 3 months since I left India with S leaving behind my parents and friends and holding on to a lot of dreams and a lifetime commitment of togetherness sharing ups and downs of what life offers us...

On this occasion, I plan to put in writing my experiences on my on-line journal a different series.. SS in US :-).. Apun Bhi Amreeka mein series... long pending, shelved as a draft for quite some time, finally seeing the light of the day.

It seems like ages since that has happened and I think I have come a long way from being an awe-struck new bride to a reasonably adjusted housewife in this pardes..

Even though I had seen a lot of desi-Hinglish movies, heard a lot about the life and ways here, and read a lot about US, it was entirely different when it came to first-hand experience. Having gotten into the Lufthansa flight from Hyd to Atlanta, and sleep-traveling from Hyderabad to Germany, had a flight change in Germany and then another sleep stretch began from Germany to Atlanta. The first few things that stuck me were the high escalators and the conveyor belts in the airport and the MARTA transit train inside the airport and all the American and African-American employees and passengers and felt truly that I had come to Pardes finally to stay for a while... was I glad, sad, or whatever, no idea.. just looking forward to a new life together..

aankhon mein sapne liye
ghar se hum chal toh diye
jaane yeh raahe ab le jaayengi kahaan
mitti ki khushbu aaye
palkon pe aansu laaye
palkon pe reh jaayega yaadon ka jahaan
manjil nayi hain
anjaana hai kaarava
chalna sang-sang hai yahaan

a little change here being not tanha dil.. sathi ke sang :-)

A friend of ours came to pick us up at the airport and the drive from there had been uneventful with me looking out of the windows at the cars that passed us by and the buildings on the road-side that I could see. When we finally went to our house or "Nest", it was in a mess but still felt really glad and warm and relaxed after traveling for almost 24-hours at a stretch.

Reached home by around 5 p.m. and then S went to pick up some milk and fruits while I went on to unpack my pooja stuff and then set the pooja place up after bath. With S bringing the milk and me being the senti, religious me, applying pasupu and kumkum to the stove, the gadapa (doorstep) boiled the milk for the first time praying for a happy life together. My first cooking was a disaster, the salt-less tomato dal and potato chip-like potato fry :( but then we were too drained to think of anything else and after calling up our parents and announcing our safe arrival, just crashed to sleep only to get up at 3 a.m. the next day.. and then I knew the actual feeling for the much-heard term "jet-lag", unable to stay up after 3 p.m. and get up early around 1 to 2 a.m., unpacking, sorting, cleaning stuff.. and it took almost a week for the biological clock to set itself up for my new life on the other end of the globe :)...

There ends my tale of travel and the first few days.. more experiences to unravel soon in the upcoming SS in US series ;)))))))

Early Blossoms

As it is getting warmer, the new blossoms, the sudden greenery on what were previously nothing but trees with dried branches and the birds chirping away to glory from dawn to around p.m. it is all gradually becoming a really beautiful scenery..... Hmmmmm, finally 3 months after coming to this place, I finally am beginning to like it. Well, US is not such a bad place to live for a while. If only this damn (excuse my language) EAD is processed and I get to work, I might actually love this place :)

My New Year Gift :))

I have my lappy back, fixed and back in shape...... :))))) and you bet I have been on cloud nine since then.. It is amazing to note how computer has become everything for us in such a short span of time. Only a couple of years ago, I did not own a computer and today my life kind of revolves around it.. Got to cook,; movietime.. desivideos, andhraguyz, etc.; talking to family and friends, google talk and web cam; watching cricket, streambox; temperature forecast, weather; got to go somewhere, print the instructions from google; on-line journal; missing celebrations in India, view pics in Snapfish or yahoo;.... phew!!! this tiny little thing has soley monopolized my life ever since I had been in US..

Gone are the days that I wait for S to come from office and pounce on his laptop ignoring him completely after a long and hard day's work... got on concentrate on that poor soul some too :)))).... and I love the freedom that I get from not depending on friends or neighbors for cooking tips.

Yugaadi Subhakaankshalu... :)

UGADI.. every festival holds a sinificance of its own in terms of traditions, customs, and rituals.. and even for every individual who celebrates it, it does a leave a mark.

For me, Ugadi means a festival of new beginnings and the Ugadi pacchadi.. a pickle made of all the flavors.. sweet, bitter, sour, salt, spicy and tart.. Shadruchulu (six tastes or flavors) which signifies that life is a combination of all the phases... being in US, I could not manage to get vepa puvvu (neem flower) to add.., so my pacchadi would be without bitter and tart tastes, hopefully our lives in this coming year go on smoothly just like this without any bitter notes :).

The nava dhanyalu that we got for pooja today. :)

This is my Ugadi on my own, so with a little goof-ups like dilute pickle, etc. managed to finish pooja by 5:45 a.m. before the thithi changes..

I miss India now, the panchanga Sravanam (yearly forecast and various types of pacchadi tastes as we visit friends and family and of course the annual visit to the local temple... miss you mom and your Ugadi pacchadi, that is the best I have tasted ever, love it even more after today's disastrous attempt at it :).

For a change, that is the picture of the Rangoli in front of our doorstep. Happy Ugaadi To All of You out there

St. Patricks Day.. Atlanta Series 4

This Saturday, March 17th, was the St. Patricks Day an Irish festival and we, me and S, happened to inadvertently be on-lookers of the parade in downtown when we went to the library.

It was amazing and I really loved being a part of the celebrations. It was extremely cold that particular day with the wind-speed a little on the higher side, but nothing could stop me from standing and gazing the event with wonder.. it was green every where I could see.. green dangling chains, jackets, shirts, etc. and for the first time, saw a lot of kids on the streets too.

The very fact that these golden oldies took out time to be there in the parade made it all the more beautiful..

This green thing had a horn sounding like a frog too :).

Coming from the other side of the globe, I most certainly am taking in everything with an awe and capturing all such moments in the cam as well as my space, my blog.. :), might seem crazy to some but for me little things like these make life worth living :))

The Horse Cart Ride.. Atlanta Series 3

One thing I have been pestering S since I had first been to downtown was for a horse ride.... yup!! you heard it right, a horse-cart ride with a guided trip around downtown.. S kept on avoiding every time we went to library citing the chilly weather as an excuse... but the persistent devil that I can be, I managed to convince him and flagged down one cart and finally we went on a ride on a very fine warm day.

I enjoyed every single momemt of that.. it lasted around half-hour and turned out to be a well-spent one, getting to know the place and history of several of the buildings and roads that we normally do not bother to know much about.

Added to that, the driver, Ed, was a man of many words and we thorughly enjoyed the complete ride with him taking us through several things in general, life movies, philosophy, India, culture, etc.

This, according to me, is a must-do thing, no matter what age group you belong to if you happen to be in Atlanta.

Georgia Aquarium.. Atlanta Series 2

The Georgia Aquarium.. The one trip one would enjoy a lot if you like aquatic animals as much as I do.. and of course, the kids would just love it!!! :))).

I must thank S for loads of patience he has taking me to all these places.. I know it would be a great pain at times with the slow pace that I can manage.. thanks a ton S.. :))..

This place has five thematic zones.. and at certain exhibits, we can even touch the fishes and feel them :)... and the best part is the fishes have a 15-minute break ever 15 minutes of touch-and-feel session.. me waiting for the stingray :)))

Crab fish taking rest after the exhibit..

A huge tortoise..

A display full of colorful fish..

Home away from home.. creating a natural home fot the fish..

The Beluga whales...

There are lots and lots of pics from that place.. will need to find another option like flicker of yahoo photos to show them all.. will try to post my favorite ones at least in the next post.. the problem is I like all of them :)

Atlanta As I See....

This one series has been long due.. was planning to put all the experiences in US and pics of places I had been to so far... here goes the first of many :)..

I have been in this place for the past 3 months and am slowly getting to like this place as it is getting warmer.. This dome is in Downtown Atlanta, near CNN Head Quarters.. the picture taken the first time I visited Downtown..

This pic is taken near from the food zone in the building which houses CNN Head Quarters.. Flags of all the nations in which CNN has branches.. on the flooring below is the world map on the tiles.. could not take of that as it was full of diners :(.

This is the picture of the building with glass.. I loved the way the clouds could be seen on the building being a first-timer for such view..

We had been on this trip called Inside CNN which consisted of guided tour on technicalities of news broadcasting, control-room experience stimulated, some memorablia of CNN war-time coverage, etc. We had a lot of fun doing this DVD recording in Interactive News Desk session reading news clippings just like the original anchors, tele prompters, costumes, mike, etc... dont miss this one if you happen to be in Atlanta.

Holi Hai!!!!!!

Holi.. the term to me signifies masti, colors, bonfire, eggs, and tomatoes :).. loved all the times as kids when used to run across the streets with water pistols, faces and hair covered with colors for days.. but that seems sooo soooo long ago.

...and the days me, kiran, and ipsy used to celebrate in bangalore, the late evening holi with colors and sweets. It is sad to note as to how we give up all our little pleasures as we grow up :))).

This also reminds me of two songs Rang Barse Bheege (Amitabh and Rekha) and Jai Jai Shiv Shankar (Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna) we used to see year after year in Chitrahaar(a movie music program in DD)..

Happy Holi.. Wish you all a colorful and joyous life ahead.

Nature's Explanation!!

Nice forward from Aysha again :).. keep sending girl. love them :))

Really Amazing!!! Try this...

Why wedding ring should put on the fourth finger??

Thumb represents parents
Second finger represents brothers & sisters
Center finger represents own self
Fourth finger represents your partner
Last finger represents your children
Really interesting

Why wedding ring should put on the fourth finger??
Pls follow the below step, really god made this a miracle (this is from a Chinese excerpt)

Firstly, show your palm, center finger bend and put together back to back
Secondly, the rest 4 fingers tips to tips
Games begin, follow the below arrangement, 5 finger but only 1 pair can split.

Try to open your thumb, the thumb represents parents, it can be open because all human does go thru sick and dead. Which are our parents will leave us one day
Please close up your thumb, then open your second finger, the finger represent brothers and sisters, they do have their own family which is too they will leave us too.

Now close up your second finger, open up your little finger, this represent your children. Sooner or later they too will leave us for they got they own living to live.

Nevertheless, close up your little finger, try to open your fourth finger which we put our wedding ring; you will be surprise to find that it cannot be open at all. Because it represent husband and wife, this whole life you will be attach to each other

Real love will stick together ever and forever. ....

One Life..

Life is like a water bubble, we never know when that would simply burst.. i remember the song

aagadu e nimishamu nee kOsamu
aagite saagadu yee lOkamu
munduku saagadu yee lOkam

meaning world does not wait for you even for a minute. If it does, it cant progress..

and it is so true, we have a limited time period and just like everything else we come with an expiry date, the only difference is no one knows when it is and no point knowing it either!!
